deals for carry ranges, and the move comes after pressure from consumers following the sandy hook shooting. gun rights advocates are calling for a boycott of groupon. >>> a man in new ze land has come up with a controversial plan to save mative birds. he wants to get -- native birds. he wants to get kid of cats. he's not recommending people euthanize their cats but instead spay or neuter them and not release them when they die. the plan has many furious. >>> 8:19. and we're now learning a child was killed in a horrible crash on an icy highway in ohio. in all, 60 cars and 16 big rigs were involved in the pileup near natty yesterday. one 12-year-old died in the crash. dozens of others were hurt. investigators are blaming a spud -- blaming a sudden bust of snow for the pileup. >> inclement weather, heavy snow. the snow came down rather quickly, was sticking to everything, includes the roadway. >> at least 20 crash victims are still in the hospital. two of them are listed in critical condition. >>> 19 minutes after 8:00. the tattoos of 49ers' tattoos of clip, that artist is see -- of

on that. we had the big sandy relief bill, $60 billion of mostly pork barrel spending, republicans blinked on that. now we have the debt kraoerblgs it looks like the president will get his way on that at least for now. i've been in washington for a longtime, 25 years covering the debt deals and the budget deals. what is frustrating about this is that the only time i can recall over the last 25 years congress has had to get serious about cutting spending and reducing the deficit is when they are at the point of this debt ceiling, and the president says we don't want to use that any more as a kind of point of emphasis, and i think that is a mistake, because what it means is we're never going to get serious about the debt unless we use the debt ceiling as that point where we make a deal to reduce the spending. martha: very distressing. matt, steve, thank you very much, guys. we'll see where this goes. we'll see you soon. >> thanks. >> thank you, martha. bill: 13 minutes before the hour and just about everyone is watching their taxes go higher. why is a famous protkpwoefrl and a pretty good on

weapons ban want us all to remember. the 26 children and teachers gunned down at the sandy hook elementary school almost six weeks ago. and these are the guns they want to get off the streets. the legislation unveiled today marks the first major test of whether the newtown, connecticut, massacre was indeed a turning point in the national debate over gun control. let's bring in our chief congressional correspondent, dana bash. dana, one senator in particular is on a personal mission to get this measure passed. >> reporter: that's right. of all of the gun control items that president obama proposed last month, earlier this month, i should say, this is going to be the toughest to pass through congress, reviving the assault weapons ban, which expired about a decade ago, almost. but it is because this particular senator is on a personal mission, based on a tragedy that happened four decades ago. for dianne feinstein, it's personal. >> i became mayor as a product of assassination. >> both mayor moscone and supervisor harvey milk have been shot and killed. >> reporter: the death of her colleagues

recently, we're all people of sandy hook. >> yeah. oh, my, george, we do have to take a break. more with you just on other side. and later on, we're going to get you ready for the screen actor guilds awards. who's favored to take home one of these statues. erables you either leave this bloodied or with my blood on your swords. >> oh, my. if anything ever called for an oh myy it's that classic scene from "star trek." that is impressive. we're back talking with actor george takei. he's in new york, the author of the book "oh myy!" there goes the internet. you tweet such funny stuff. what's the funniest thing you tweeted or the cattiest? run us through some of those. >> you can be funny and also relevant and have a commentary on social or political situations. and one of them was when a tennessee politician tried to introduce a bill to make criminal the use of the word "gay" by teachers, which is ridiculous. it's outrageous. first of all, there is free speech in this country, the first amendment. and so this man doesn't even know our constitution. what i did was all right, if you're go

just came up and the bitter cold snap moving n adding more misery for struggling hurricane sandy victims. many still don't have electricity. >> we have no hot water, no heat, no electricity half the time. the generators are off and on, blowing out electronics in your house and everything. we just totally losing out as tenants. >> steve: no kidding. officials in staten island estimate 1463 people still remain displaced from their homes. maria molina joins us from the weather center. it doesn't help if you have no electricity and it is like hyped you right now here in the new york city, like 20. >> that's right. very sad, unfortunately across places in the northeast dealing with extreme cold. especially those without power and across places in the midwest. even though we're used to the cold out here, we have seen some delays or school closures across places in minute money. so that's how cold it is out there. some of these current temperatures are just incredible. 28 degrees below zero in international falls. 11 below zero in minneapolis. 8 below zero in green bay. you factor in th

recomme sandys, future wars, bond markets that we've put ourselves in a vulnerable position. that seems to me to be a dangerous thing that you're recommending. >> we've actually seen that in practice, i can say, look, if i were -- if i could ideally, i'd say let's have a plan to reduce the budget deficit five years out, ten years out from now while at the same time doing stimulus for the economy, washington doesn't work that way. if you spend a lot of your time talking about, well, the debt and entitlements are the big problem, the message that -- actually what we need to do right now is promote jobs gets lost. and in fact, we've spent the last 2 1/2 years focused entirely on arguing about the long-term deficit, entitlements and doing nothing for employment right now. that balance has got to shift. >> we can shift it in lots of ways. one of them is spending. the other is immigration reform, free trade, change the corporate tax rates. there's lots of things to -- >> none of those things has much change. >> i want to clarify something you just said. one of the things that's really frustra

sandy. tens of thousands of families still displaced or lack the proper heat to deal with the cold. you may remember the senate did approve the full $60 billion relief package back in december but then the house took recess and did nothing. house speaker john boehner called a vote under pressure. once congress reconvened the first week in january first they approved the $9 billion then the additional $50 billion two weeks later. the vote in the senate is on the remaining plus $50 billion. we're back after the break. stay with us. armed with the facts, and the arguments to feel confident in their positions. i want them to have the data and i want them to have the passion. but it's also about telling them, you're put on this planet for something more. i want this show to have an impact beyond just informing. an impact that gets people to take action themselves. as a human being, that's really important. this is not just a spectator sport. what we need are people prepared for the careers of our new economy. by 2025 we could have 20 million jobs without enough college graduates to f
